Heart failure is one of the principal causes of death in the western world. Worldwide, it is estimated that cardiac
disease caused approximately 22% of annual deaths by 2001. For example, Latin America reported a total incidence
of 1%, with hospital readmission rates of 30% and a 1-year mortality rate of 24% representing that a heavy burden
for health services and an important factor for disabilities and reducing life expectancy. Ischemic heart disease,
hypertension, rheumatic/other valvular heart diseases, cardiopulmonary disease, and cardiomyopathy are considered
the principal causes of heart failure, being, in consequence, the comprehension of the pathophysiology of these
cardiac disease one of the most important aims in the biomedical research nowadays.
