概要

Iranian Fisheries Status: Update (2004-2014)

Harlioglu M. M. and Farhadi A.

Iran is well-positioned as a fish producer due to its geographical location (large brackish water source of the Caspian Sea in the north and salt water source of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman in the south) and rich brackish, freshwater and marine fish species (trout, carp, sturgeon, sea bass, sea bream, flounder, mackerel, sardine, tuna, sea cucumber, sea shrimp, crayfish). Total fishery production in 2014 was 947,352 tons. During that year, fish production from capture fisheries was 575,512 tons (60.74% of total fishery production), and production from aquaculture was 371,840 tons (39.26% of total fishery production). Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman fisheries are the most important fisheries in Iran (93% of total fisheries). Aquaculture production is growing rapidly in Iran. For example, the total aquaculture production in 2004 and 2014 was 124,560 tons and 349,365 tons, respectively. Thus, the share of aquaculture in total fish production has been increasing every year. The ratio of aquaculture production to total fish production was 26.26% in 2004, 32.65% in 2008, and 39.26% in 2014. Rainbow trout and carp are the main farmed freshwater fish species. In recent years, Iran's aquatic product exports have increased from US$85 million in 2004 to US$300 million in 2014. In conclusion, despite Iran's long coastline, the aquaculture industry is not yet fully developed and could be further developed by strengthening aquaculture and fish cage farming.
