Analysis of fish diets and feeding habits is important in determining the habitat and behavior of fish in a water body, thereby ascertaining feeding preferences and minimizing the degree of competition for food. It has been proposed that the natural diets of fish can be classified into three groups: (a) primary diets, i.e., natural diets preferred by fish and on which fish thrive best under favourable conditions; (b) contingent diets, i.e., natural diets preferred by fish and consumed when available; and (c) emergency diets, i.e., diets ingested by fish when their preferred diets are not available and on which fish can barely survive.
