概要

One Excellent Approach of Propulsion Study in College

Yongjian Gu

Propulsion is a complex and high technology. The propulsion as one of the popular courses has been attracting numerous college students majoring in aero engineering. The propulsion study, however, is challenging for the students since there are a large amount of properties and equations are involved in propulsion performance analysis and calculation. This paper presents an excellent approach of the propulsion study which bases on the author’s teaching and R&D experience for the students to better understand and conduct the propulsion performance analysis and calculation.
The approach applies the public data of the existing propulsion for the students to verify the propulsion properties and performance by using the concepts, charts, and equations from the propulsion study. These properties and performance include, for instance, adiabatic and polytropic efficiencies of compressors and turbines, pressure and temperature ratio of each station member, fuel/air ratio, specific thrust, thrust specific fuel consumption, propulsive efficiency, thermal efficiency, and overall efficiency of the engine, etc. In the approach, the stages of compressor and turbines and combustion chamber efficiency are also to be verified. Through the practice of the approach, the concepts, parameters, and equations in propulsion study were not boring to the students and the students’ abilities in propulsion analysis, calculation, and design were extremely enhanced. In the paper, the author presents a Pratt & Whitney J-57B afterburning turbojet engine as the example to illustrate the approach in the propulsion study.
Conclusion:
The approach greatly increased the student interests in propulsion study. The students were able to understand the propulsion concepts comprehensively and apply the equations for propulsion analysis and performance calculation confidently.
