Venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (PE) (collectively venous thromboembolism [VTE]) is an enormous health concern worldwide. There are approximately 1,000,000 VTE cases per year in both the United States and European Union, with a yearly mortality rate of about 300,000 in each.
