概要

Assessment of the bacteriological quality and contamination risk of groundwater in the St. Martins Island, Bangladesh

Mahir Tajwar

The demand for essential services in the St. Martin’s Island has increased, notably water supply and water management infrastructure due to the rapid urbanization. Because of insufficient clean drinking water from surface water, the inhabitants now rely on groundwater to supplement their resources. An assessment of intrinsic vulnerability and contamination was carried out where the interpretation of water quality using parameters like pH, redox potential (Eh), electrical conductivity (EC) and the temperature has been done. The presence of Escherichia coli, arsenic, groundwater chloride, and nitrate concentrations were determined from the data collected from 67 locations of Saint Martin’s island. The amount of Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, SO42-, NO3- in the sample was determined in the lab by Ion Chromatograph measurement. Chloride ions & Bi-carbonate were calculated by acid-base titration. Spatial Variation of Aquifer Thickness, Hydraulic Conductivity, and Water Quality Parameter has been done to show and evaluate the extent of Aquifer Vulnerability through geostatistical analysis. The sources, from which infiltration of these contaminants occur in groundwater, have been proposed.
